Rally Cap - Not Your Typical Game

Welcome to the exciting journey of coaching in the Rally Cap program!

As a new coach, you're stepping into a vital role, shaping the early baseball experiences of young players. The Rally Cap program is designed to make baseball fun and engaging, emphasizing the fundamental skills of the game in a supportive environment. You'll have access to comprehensive resources, including equipment guidelines, field preparation tips, and detailed practice plans, ensuring you have all the tools needed to foster a positive and enriching atmosphere. Embrace this opportunity to inspire, teach, and grow alongside your team, making every pitch, hit, and run a step towards their love for the game.

Innings

Each Rally Cap session has 3 innings played.

Rule Modifications

There are several rules that are used to ensure that players get to experience the full excitement of hitting the ball, running the bases and playing several positions on defense several times per session. Rally Cap is designed to be inclusive for players of all abilities and adaptable for the individual player's development process.

Hitting Team

A half inning in Rally Cap sees a team of 6-8 players hit and run on the bases. Generally, players are kept to advancing 1 base at a time. Outs are not recorded and batters and runners continue their time on the base paths. Runners should be reminded of the rules when tagged or forced out but allowed to continue running.

Rally Cap is designed to be malleable to each team and the individual player. Although, it's highly recommended for players to use the tee for first several weeks of the season, as the players progress through their development, coaches can introduce coach pitching to players. In order to keep the games moving, coaches should limit each hitter to 3 attempts from live pitching and then the player should attempt to hit the ball off a tee for 2 more attempts.

At all times, the hitter should only receive 5 attempts to hit the ball. After the 5th attempt, a coach rolls a ball out and the batter runs to 1B.

When all but 1 hitter has had their at-bat, "Last Batter" is called and the defensive team should attempt to make a play at home plate. The last batter of each inning is encouraged to run around all the bases and touch home plate to complete the half inning.

Defensive Team

Defensive players should be encouraged to finish a play in several ways:

  1. catching the ball in the air
  2. fielding a groundball and tossing it to their nearest teammate that's covering a bag
  3. touching the nearest bag with their foot

Remember the key is to focus on the progress not perfection. Reward and acknowledge the attempt not the result.

In Rally Cap there are no outfielders. Players field all six infield positions (P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B and SS + extra players). After each batter, positions are rotated and one of the substitutes is brought on the field.

Inning Conclusion

After a full inning is played, one team heads to the outfield to do the Skills portion of the session and the team completing the skills heads to the infield to player their inning versus the remaining team.
