The 3 B's
Every Player Has a Job: Simplifying Defense with the 3 B’s
When a ball is put into play, every player has a job. Teaching young players to understand this basic principle is a basic fundamental of building a team defense strategy.
Coaches want to simplify defensive strategy so every player can quickly understand their role after the ball is hit. One way to make it easy to remember is using The 3 B’s — Ball, Base, Backup.
Every time the ball is put into play, every defender should immediately think:
1. Ball
Someone must field the ball.
This is usually the nearest player — whether it’s a ground ball, fly ball, or line drive. If you are closest to the ball, your first job is simple: go get it!
2. Base
All bases must be covered.
Players not directly fielding the ball need to think about covering a base.
- Infielders and catchers must get to their assigned bases.
- Second base and shortstop need to be taught the various assignments based on the situation and ball location
- Pitchers and outfielders should also know when to cover first base or back up throws to home.
Covering bases gives the fielders a chance to make a play and prevent extra bases.
3. Backup
Backup both the fielder and the bases.
Every throw in baseball needs a backup. Players who are not covering a base or fielding the ball should move into position behind:
- The fielder fielding the ball, or
- The location or base where the throw is being made.
Backing up prevents overthrows from turning into extra bases for the other team.
Why the 3 B’s Matter
By emphasizing Ball, Base, and Backup, you teach players:
- Every player is involved in every play — no one stands still.
- Mistakes can be minimized — because someone is always there to cover or recover.
- The team works as one — whether the ball is hit to left field or the pitcher.
Most importantly, it simplifies defensive thinking for young players. In the chaos of a live play, they’ll have one simple checklist in their head before every pitch and they should know their assignment based on the following questions:
▶ Am I getting the Ball?
▶ Am I covering a Base?
▶ Am I providing a Backup?
Every player has a job.
Ball. Base. Backup.
Baseball is a complicated game with lots of rules. The 3 B's helps the players prepare for each play instead of reacting.
